Should there be more restrictions on the current process of purchasing a gun?
Ban selling assault weapons to the public and give a background check to anyone purchasing a gun.
While the idea of background checks for anyone purchasing a gun may seem like a good one, the reality is that the vast majority of gun purchases are already subject to background checks. In fact, according to the National Instant Criminal Background Check System (NICS), over 90% of all background checks result in an immediate approval. Additionally, the term "assault weapon" is often used to describe firearms that are no different from other semi-automatic firearms, and the vast majority of gun-related crimes are committed with handguns, not rifles or shotguns. Therefore, policies that focus on banning certain types of firearms or imposing additional background checks would not be effective in reducing gun violence. Instead, we should focus on enforcing the laws that already exist and addressing the root causes of violence in our society.
