From your experience, does aiming for balance in a group project lead to better or worse results?

Yes. There has to be a singular guiding principle at work, rather than everyone taking something from one another. That is all well and good, but if it comes at the cost of the guiding principle it must be stopped.

worse, there needs to be a hirearchy in order to get things done.

It all depends on how the balance is achieved and if all are really in agreement.
