Two years ago this month, California narrowly avoided rolling outages after wildfire smoke knocked out electric lines that carry large amounts of power from the Pacific Northwest. The state again toed the precipice during a hot spell last September, fending off blackouts only after officials sent out an emergency alert to millions of mobile phones begging people to use less power.
Again and again, I’ve found myself asking: Would it be easier and less expensive to limit climate change — and its deadly combination of worsening heat, fire and drought and flood — if we were willing to live with the occasional blackout?

The rich people with electric cars will all have 6000 dollar propane generators that run their house and charge their tesla during blackouts.
It'll be the poors, yet again, getting their ACs turned off in a heat wave with screaming babies sweating through the night.

No problem, if there’s a blackout, you can just buy a generator to charge your electric car. Oh wait, never mind.

Those whole-house natural gas generators are easily above $10-12k installed in upstate NY.

Enjoy your electric cars, Californians.

It is a common misconception that the anti-FF car laws intend to force us into EVs.
They are to force most of us out of owning cars. We'll ride bikes, and public transit when we have permission to leave our 15-minute neighborhoods.
Now get back in your pod and eat your bugs.
@Bip4rtisanLynxGreen10mos10MO
We got nuclear power in Georgia, that's why we'll be the true EV capital
Funny you mention nuclear, because it wasn't mentioned in the article

Why, it’s almost like they don’t want to solve the problem
@F4irTradeEleanor10mos10MO
why occasional? let's just throw the switch once and for all.
@M1norityAvaRepublican10mos10MO
The obvious solution, unless they hate the planet.

One step closer to "Is Eugenics the best solution to combat climate change?"

I’d be okay with LA doing blackouts 3 weeks out of every 4. They are the biggest consumers of energy in this state and the biggest proponents of these types of measures. They should show us how it’s done. Start in August!

Soon to appear in the LA Times Food Section: "How eating cold beans from a recycled can can save the Earth."
