Q&A with Tony Fitzpatrick, candidate for Governor of California in 2026
Should the government force everyone to verify their real name on social media?
Nikki Haley's idea of having to verify people on social media by their "real name" is, in my opinion, a direct violation of the First Amendment. People should have the freedom to express themselves without revealing their real identity to the general public. Some people are in situations where they share/expose information that could result in them being attacked on a personal level.
We've seen it happen many times where either a whistleblower or someone who is a part of a minority is targeted online because of their identity, and we should not be federally mandating any sort of conditions or regulations where there is the potential for a wider spread of hate, especially acts of hate that cross the line such as hate crimes and doxxing.
