Religious symbolism is not the church. Separation of church and state refers to not favoring or opposing any religion by state authority, and that no religion can directly influence a government. People can believe in what they please and have religion affect their personal opinions and beliefs, but it cannot be the basis upon which decisions are made, nor can we acknowledge any religion as supreme in our country. Most of the founding fathers took inspiration from Enlightenment Thinkers, most of them Deists instead of common religious people. In our treaties and our constitution, it never states Christianity as our religion, nor does it allow favoring any religion in our First Amendment
