sharing meals is very personal and I think having a conversation ad that closeness would give people a chance to get to know one another.

The response acts as if "a step towards unity" is meant to imply perfect balance and coexistence. Being nice to other people and sharing will not instantly solve anything, but it is a step towards a solution.
