I think it's the fear of what they believe in, and the people who follow that religion, the fear that what they believe in doesn't match with our own beliefs.

the culture many religions foster is comforting to practitioners, but with other religions it's foreign and odd. The easiest way to fix this is to not make it seem so. other religions have different views, but they probably don't want to bring other religions down. if they do, then that's a different story.

Because they most likely don't agree with them and since they are not on the same region they will be treated as not on the same side.
Religion is inherently self-serving and exists to keep people in line to begin with. While people should be free to follow their religion of choice, mistrust will continue to exist unless steps are taken to prevent people from using religion as a tool for discrimination.
